TOM'S
KNOB REBUILD KIT
Easily repair
the failed bottom end of fresh air vent drain line that is Part number
363-170 or AHC321, often referred to as Tom's Knob.
Tom's Knob is
the colloquial or common name of the drain hose for the MGB and MGC
ventilation grill at the base of the windshield. It is no
longer available for purchase in the US so this is an easy and accurate
alternative for your classic MGB.
If you've ever
gotten water in the car around the radio center console area then the
drain hose from the ventilation box below the grill is most likely the
culprit. The drain hose at the bottom of this vent box (visible from
looking through the chrome grill) leads to an approximately 10" long
shaped hose that ends under the car up close to the right hand side and
forward end of the transmission tunnel. At the bottom of this hose
(referred to in parts drawings as 363-170) is a flexible ball end with
a duckbill opening.
To clean water
and debris out of the hose you go under the car and squeeze the ball so
that the duck bill opens. If the built up debris doesn't drop out then
the typical solution is to reach in with a rounded nose screwdriver and
stir up the collected muck until the drain line is cleared.
The problem is
that 45 to 65 year old drain tubes tend to harden and/or dry rot and
fail at the bottom due to age. This rubberized replacement end solves
that problem. Simply cutting the failed ball end off the drain tube and
gluing this replacement in place restores the cleaning and draining
capabilities to the Tom's Knob drain tube. Plus it maintains
the correct design and look of the original drain line so that your can
maintains more of its original character.
Included in the
kit are the new duck bill ball end valve, two sizing rings, a tube of
super glue and instructions.
The replacement
process is quite simple and the drain tube does not have to be removed
from the car.
1) Reach up with
a razor knife and cut off the old ball/duckbill end. The remaining
drain tube can stay in place. Just first make note of the side to side
direction of the duck bill so the new one can go back in the same
orientation.
2) Put some
rubbing alcohol on a rag and clean the remaining end of the drain
tube.
4) Dry test the
fit of the new duck bill end. If it is a snug fit remove it and run a
bead of super glue around its inside edge and press it back into place.
Done.
3) If the
replacement duck bill is a loose fit then try the .03" and .06"
oversized filler rings and select whichever fits best. Then glue this
onto the existing drain tube end. Once the glue is dry then glue the
new ball end/duckbill onto the filler ring. Done.
